課程概述

This course gives an overall view of materials science and engineering. It is an entry-level course and is designed for students who want to have basic knowledge about materials. Starting from atomic bonding and crystal structures, we will discuss the defects and their roles in the solid-state diffusion and mechanical properties. Phase diagrams and kinetics, which are important in the processing and preparation of materials, are then introduced. Furthermore, special topics will also cover alloys, polymers, composites, and semiconductors. Finally, some important material properties will be discussed, including electrical, thermal, magnetic, and optical properties important to engineering applications.

1. To learn the basic bondings and the crystal structures of materials; 2. To understand the defects, thermodynamics (phase diagram) and kinetics for materials processing; 3. To have a basic understanding of engineering materials.
